R
iverside County recently hosted a
reception for a group of more than 40
federal, state, military and business
leaders who are visiting the area from
India. The event highlighted progress
that has been made in establishing
close ties between the county and
one of its key trading partners.
The event, boasting a crowd of nearly
200,
held at the County Administrative
Center in downtown Riverside, was
attended by several dozen business
and government leaders from around
Riverside County, as well as business
owners and manufacturers who hope to
attract foreign direct investment from
India and export goods, services and
agricultural products to the country.
Our country has rolled out our welcome
mat to the world these past four years,
and India is one of those nations
that has emerged as a key trading
partner for us,” Supervisor Jeff Stone
said in welcoming the group. “You
are also a key international investor
and job creator in our country.”
Anupam Kulshreshtha, retired deputy
auditor general of India and a professor
at MIT, thanked the group for the warm
welcome. He noted that the group of
Indian business and government leaders
assembled in the county administrative
center has been touring the U.S., most
recently at the UC Riverside Extension,
where group members were able to
interact and share information with
members of the UCR faculty regarding
finance and local government.
This has been a very good experience
for us,” Kulshreshtha said. “I look
forward to a long-term interaction
with UCR and Riverside County.”
The reception also honored an India-
born businessman, Nachhattar Chandi,
who has created hundreds of jobs
across the Coachella Valley and in the
state with his string of gasoline stations
and quick-serve restaurants. Chandi,
owner/president of Mecca-based The
Chandi Group, owns several Arco/AM-
PM outlets and works with some of the
largest food franchises in the world.
Stone hailed Chandi for his
success since coming to the U.S.
about 20 years ago, noting that
annual revenues at his businesses
exceed $350 million each year.
Through hard work and dedication,
he has achieved the American dream,”
