Project Overview:

Geel Place ApartmentsIn 2001, the County of Riverside provided HOME funds for the development and construction of a 45-unit Single Resident Occupancy (SRO)/studio rental housing facility serving special needs for individuals diagnosed with mental illnesses. Much like the internationally-renowned community in Belgium that Geel Place was named for, the housing complex provides special needs individuals with a communal environment where residents can gain much-needed independence while still receiving care and support services. Other funding sources included a loan from the Riverside County Department of Mental Health, Affordable Housing Program Funds and a tax credit equity contribution. The project was constructed and leased on County-owned property located in the City of Riverside. The project was completed in 2004 and the total development cost was approxiamtely $4.3 million. The affordability period is for 55 years.

In 2006, the California State Association of Counties (CSAC) awarded Riverside County’s Geel Place Apartments with the CSAC Challenge Merit Award for its innovative and beneficial program.

Community Details:
The housing complex consists of 44 SRO/studio units and one resident manager unit within six buildings clustered around an open-space area lined with a variety of plants, trees and flowers, and free-flowing walkways. Each unit features a private bathroom, furnished living room and kitchen. The one- and two-story buildings offer residents their own private patio or balcony, as well as a communal patio or balcony perfect for social interaction among neighbors.

Amenities:
Amenities include a large community room designed for residents to use for more formal gatherings, resident support services and meetings. The Riverside County Department of Mental Health provides on-site counseling services and meetings with case workers, ensuring a supportive environment throughout the complex.
